My day vary from day to day as I am not always on a set or with private client every day. Many artists have an additional job to work into their schedule. There are many layers to running my company. Applying makeup is a part of it, but there is so much more. I have orders to fill, a website to run, artist to train, clients to contact, videos to create, kits and brushes to clean. Different seasons will have a different focus.
What advice would you give someone considering this career?
Shadow and assist different artists as possible. New artists tend to get inspired from social media. Makeup styles on social media are not the same techniques used for everyday life and film/tv. Keep your eyes opened to going beyond makeup application. Learn about camera, lighting, textures of skin and color theory. Makeup in my line of work is about creating a story not necessarily a piece of art.
What is a book or movie that has inspired you?
Makeup: Classic Beauty: The History of makeup
This book is gold! Not like any other makeup book. This book breaks down the History of makeup. I have gained such an appreciation for science, art and culture that is a part of the history of makeup.
Do you (or your company) offer internships or job shadow opportunities to high school students? If so, how would a student go about applying for one of those?
Yes, we have shadow and internship options. We interview the intern and decide the best placement based on qualifications. Projects vary from assisting with office duties or shadowing on location.
