Lianne Lami
My title is President & CEO of an engineering firm called Bocci Engineering, LLC. As the owner of a small business, my daily work life varies significantly from corporate & legal document reviews, to cash flow management, to engineering design review, project management, sales business development, forecasting & growth planning, and engineering design. I find myself working a lot with people, coaching, mentoring, advocating, and helping them become better engineers and business minded consultants. I still really enjoy solving problems, especially in our energy analysis software models and applications to make our client’s facilities more sustainable. Early in my career I spent more time daily doing the same engineering analysis, building the software models, inspecting the client’s facilities and equipment systems, and developing the design solutions. Today I help my team to produce the solutions more effectively.
What advice would you give someone considering this career?
Follow your passion, get as much practical – on the job experience you can even if you have to offer to volunteer to gain the experience, ask a lot questions, ask the same questions of multiple people, and remember that in engineering school your learning how to solve problems, and the process is more important than the grades. The most successful engineers learn people skills and strong communication skills.
