What does a ‘day-in-the-life’ of a CEO consist of?
This is a tough one! A CEO wears multiple hats and the prime responsibility of a CEO, in my eyes, is to find answers to the different types of struggles / queries / challenges in front of him/her. The answers at times come via ‘doing your own research’ or in most cases, finding the right professionals / individuals. These challenges could be anything – R&D, legal, regulatory, operations, logistics, sales, marketing, branding, etc or sometimes, simply our consumer. In short, a ‘day-in-the-life’ of a CEO consists of dealing with the unknowns with the help of knowns!
What advice would you give someone considering this career?
Always be true to yourself! Know your strengths and have the ability to accept your weaknesses so well that they eventually become your strengths. I am a Food Safety Scientist by training and have developed a robust experience in Operations and R&D over my decade long career. When I started my business, I didn’t have much experience in branding, marketing and sales. However, I slowly, with the help of good mentors, communities and networks, found ways to work with professionals in these fields while educating myself in ‘speaking their language’. And today, I feel much more confident in wearing these hats as needed.
What is a book or movie that has inspired you?
Hidden Figures – https://www.imdb.com/title/tt4846340/ and The Spanx Story – https://www.amazon.com/Spanx-Story-Underneath-Incredible-Storybook/dp/1400216117
I see inspirations and role models in everyone – I very strongly believe that we can learn something from everyone. My husband inspires me everyday with the small acts of kindness he does for people he doesn’t know, my friends in the Food Industry inspire and teach me how to have a open heart and be a better boss to my team every day, my friends in my networks and communities inspire me to have and implement a vision for myself and my company I never thought I could have, my personal friends, being some of my biggest cheerleaders, show and teach me what it means to stand behind and support missions like mine and finally my customers teach me what it means to care and share joy, happiness and success!
Do you (or your company) offer internships or job shadow opportunities to high school students? If so, how would a student go about applying for one of those?
Yes, we do. Based on the interest shown by the student, we will develop 2-4 week long internships for these students individually to introduce them to the Food industry and different aspects of running a business. You can reach us at hello@thefoodshop.com and in the Subject Line write INTERNSHIP and explain to us what you would like to learn with us.
